New day, New way

I was reading in an article today that most workers post-pandemic are 18-25 years old; few with determination, respect, and maturity. If this pattern persists, I am afraid that a job interview and employee write-ups will have to change with the demographic. You will have to put more mentoring/mothering in both business procedures.

A good interview requires selling your business to future employees. You must show them the benefits of working at your company. Highlight growth opportunities, education, and new skills without the expense of a high-price traditional education, organizational events to maintain a teamwork atmosphere and environment, and a two-way communication system, where you encourage the employees to bring their ideas and voices.

For employee write-ups, management should consider this approach.

1. Start with three complementing statements on the employee’s performance.

2. When addressing the offending behavior/action, inquire what happened, not focusing on your opinion, understanding, or what someone told you. I say this because there could be an outside reason for their actions. Missed work may mean unavailable childcare. And we all have experienced a fellow employee distorting the truth about our actions as well as outright lying.

3. Ask them how they could have handled the situation differently or more effectively.

4. Ask them how you could assist in bringing out better skills, knowledge, and behavioral changes.

You are probably going to say that you don't have time to baby and handhold employees. However, retention doesn't start at yearly employee evaluations, it starts at the hiring process and beyond. I recently stated that Employee  Evaluations and write-ups without a roadmap of improvement are just put-downs.  In addition, currently, most young adults don't have the emotional skills and abilities we had at the same age. I personally believe this is a product of the Instant society, as they expect their needs to be met instantly without any hard work. You have to remember also that pay is only one factor a good employee wants; especially with this generation.
